A Welcome Sign

My husband and I were driving home from dinner on Thursday evening when I saw this sign illuminated on the edge of the courthouse square.

JOY!

I have sat on the board of trustees for a dozen years now and for the last ten years, a new building has been our goal.  The public strongly wanted us to remain in the heart of town.  The opportunities for space were very limited.  Early this year, the space for building became available.  It all fell into place.  Ground breaking will be in early spring 2011.

I'm going to spend some time this weekend just driving around the square and looking at the sign.

Have a great weekend!!

  1. I used to work in a small town public library and there's no doubt that they need to be in town. During the day I always felt we were supporting the aging population. They flocked to our library for help and finding resources. It also put us closer to schools and when the closing bells would ring, our real jobs began. I loved being a public library librarian!

  2. Great news on the new library! Looks like quite a building.
I would give anything to have a town square to drive around. Charming!
    Have a great weekend.

  3. Congratulations on the new library -- and yes, it needs to be in the center of town! Ours is and is a Carnegie Building -- a bit outdated but still servicable for our community.

  4. How wonderful!!! :)

I LOVE our little community library and look forward to visiting every week. Thank you for telling me about Morrie's book, Bonnie! I'll be sure to look for it.

    Happy weekend to you,

  5. my beloved library needs 1.4 millins dollars to repair the heating and AC in the building. since it sits on prime water front property, they might tear it down and move to another building. i was horrified they are thinking of putting in in our old mall that is sinking fast. Dillards closed its doors and has enough space. I am hoping they repair what we have and keep it where it is because i love it.

  6. You go girl, it's amazing that libraries are still being built with so many closing. There is nothing quite like the feeling of a book in your hand... here's hoping the next generation will agree and flourish.

  9. Oh, how wonderful to see this library coming into being. I know you're in hog heaven! I love libraries! That's always one of the first places I've gone when we've moved to another city - go get my library card.
Now this looks like it's going to be a huge library! I love it.

  10. That is exciting and wonderful news!!!

I love our local library. All the librarians are SO kind and helpful. I think I've told you that we are hoping to move back to the South (preferably Florida), and our library is one of only 3 things I will miss about living here. A good library system is a wonderful gift.

    Have a fabulous day,
    Patti

  11. Looks like it will be a beautiful place.

From past experience one HUGE question pops to mind - - - how is it being funded? We lived through a new library project in one of our former towns, and our property taxes more than doubled - - - - in one year. Made me appreciate the OLD library.

  12. Congratulations -- that's wonderful news and how proud you must be! In our city, libraries are being decimated with budget cuts and are not closed two days of the week. It's tragic, I believe.

  13. I used to volunteer at a public library and then at our local school library. Such fulfilling work... and your work on the board is finally paying off!
Just think how fun it will be to drive around the square when children are coming out of the new library with big smiles, clutching an armful of books.
What a gorgeous facility!!!! Enjoy your ride!
    Good for you!!!!!

  15. Wow! That new library looks impressive! When is it starting and when will it be done? I'm assuming that you and a great deal to do with all of these decisions, being on the board. How did you get on the library board, anyway? How do they choose people? I wouldn't think you were ever a library worker?
