A Snowy Birthday

I like my January birthday.  It's unpredictable.  As a child, invited guests could sometimes count on sledding down the hill behind our house.  When noses were chilled, mother would break out a large thermos of steaming hot chocolate and, soon, we were ready to tackle the ride to the bottom and the trudge back up that great incline.  I didn't envy my summer birthday friends.  I still don't.

We had our first snow on my birthday this year.

The Baker is nursing a cold.  I defrosted the chicken soup (always on hand in the winter freezer) for him a few days ago and realized he couldn't be counted on to bake me a cake.  It was quite evident that we wouldn't be going out for dinner either.

Undaunted, I decided to give myself a day of being truly self-indulgent.  First a soak in a bubble bath replaced my morning shower.  I lingered so long that the dog started whining outside the bathroom door!
I wrapped myself in a cozy warm robe and, shod in fuzzy house shoes and leg warmers, it was my dress for the day.

Positioning myself between the fireplace and the front windows, I read The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson and

drank hot chocolate laced with puffy marshmallows and watched the snow fall.

It was a very good birthday!

  1. Happy birthday! Despite the fact that there was no cake, and no dinner out, you sure found some very pleasurable ways (and some of my favorites, too) to indulge yourself and on a beautiful, snowy day. Nice day! (And The Baker will do his part, too, I'm sure!)

  2. Sounds like a wonderful, wonderful birthday... even without the cake. BUT, since you are a month-long celebrator, there is still ample time for the Baker to recover and give you a delicious cake... So, I'm hoping for that. Have a wonderful weekend, Bonnie! blessings ~ Tanna

  5. Happy Birthday! All this talk of cocoa in blogland made me buy hot chocolate for the Keurig and I live in Florida.

I have a summer birthday and I never had a school birthday party. That was a bummer.

Hope the Baker feels better. Sounds like you had a nice day though.

  8. that cup of chocolate with marshmallows had me licking my screen but it did not work. guess what i get on my birthday every year? sept 5 is smack dab in the middle of hurricane season and the 3 that i have been through in GA and FL have fallen on the week of my birthday, and sept 22 of 63 i got married in a hurricane a few weeks after my birthday. i think snow is better than hurricanes, right? and if you find that bumper sticker you mentioned buy me one.

  20. It sounds like a great way to spend your birthday, Bonnie. I have a January birthday too and I've always liked it. I heard about all the snow but it doesn't seem to bother other parts of the country as much as it does here in the Northwest. We go crazy if there is half an inch.
