Summer, Tomatoes and Lightning Bugs

There are a few things I like about summer.

Fresh flowers in the garden

Lightning bugs

Freshly picked corn

First tomato simply sliced, sprinkled with salt and pepper
7-grain bread slathered with mayonnaise
Joy at the table!

Heirloom cherry tomatoes quartered
Sprinkle with a little salt and let stand for at least an hour
Thick slices of fresh mozzarella on a plate
Top with tomatoes and their juices
Sprinkle with fresh basil.

Yes, that's what I like about summer!

Oliver had fun with an errant lightning bug that got in the house,
finally chasing it out the patio door.

  1. we have all of the above but no lighting bugs.. and that second salad I will try, looks wonderful... I do love a tomato sandwich, we were raised on them. Jake hates all bugs since he has been stung several times by bees.. even a humming mosquito gets him riled up

  2. Fresh fruit is about the only thing I like about summer. Well, maybe the nice evenings where you can sit outside and eat dinner......if it isn't a thousand degrees 😄

  3. Beautiful! And I'm thinking you maybe grew it yourself? I am so glad to see you today! I was just thinking about you, and wondering how you are, and if you have quit posting.

  4. Just saw the first lightening bugs last week! My tomatoes don't even have a tinge of pink on them yet. If it ever stops raining maybe they'll ripen :) Looks delicious, Bonnie!

  5. Looks delicious Bonnie. My tomato plants in containers on the top of the boathouse are still green. Glad to see your blog post!

  6. love these tomatoes Bonnue look delicious :)

  7. Oh yum. That first tomato sandwich makes my mouth literally water!

  8. Not much any better then a fresh tomato out of the garden. Love them....Tomato sandwich with salt and pepper and good ole fattening mayo!

  9. Now you've gone and made me hungry. I'm heading out the door to buy some fresh mozzarella. I love how simple ingredients used
in the right combination can make a delicious meal.

  10. There are so many tasty summer foods.
Mr. Ken loves his tomatoes on BLT's.

    M : )

  11. Me, too! Me, too! Me, too! Me, too! And, me, too! Especially the tomatoes! Oh, these look so good, Bonnie. You've made my mouth water. Nothing like a good tomato unless it's fresh tomato with sweet corn! ;) Hope you are doing well. I've been in full out carpe diem of getting out and about. Life feels short. Think of you often. Amanda and family just passed by on their way home from a two week stay in VA. I miss going there, too. ;) blessings ~ tanna

  12. I wish I could say, "I love tomatoes" . . .
The pictures of, recipes with, slices of . . . always leaves me with, " I wish."
    Not sure why I haven't taken a liking . . .
Might be that as a child, the only vegetable I would eat was a carrot.
Thank you Bonnie for your comment about Mona on my Irish Garden House post.
    She was a special lady.
Strange how bonded we can become with those we meet in this way.

  13. Is there anything better than fresh summer tomatoes-I think not! Beautiful. They look cherokee purple heirloom variety. Delicious.

    Happy summer.

  14. I love your tomato sandwich, do you know what kind it is? It's a beautiful color. And I wonder if you know a thin skinned cherry tomato? Ours have such thick skins this year. I googled it and several suggested Sun Gold so will try them next year.

We made a whole supper the other night out of sliced tomatoes and a big skillet of fried okra with one green tomato chopped and cooked with it. I do think a couple of ears of corn on the cob would have rounded out our meal perfectly.

Do you like okra? So many don't but they just don't know what they're missing!

And so glad to know you're a Super Jan Karon fan!

    1. Those are heirloom tomatoes from our favorite local farmer. She also provides us with heirloom cherry tomatoes in multi-colors. We like okra dry-stir fried in the Indian style. Your dinner reminds me of those I love from my growing up in the south. I'd add cornbread!!

  15. Our tomatoes have been so tasty this summer. I like the tiny, sweet ones the best...and for larger ones, I have a few green ones to fix Fried Green Tomatoes..think I'll watch the movie while I eat them. lol

  16. Yummm it looks so delicious!

But why aren't you using some tool to make recipe cards for your recipes?
    Here is a good one:

  17. This looks so delicious! I am extremely impressed by your quality of writing! I will definitely need to share your blog with my friends, thanks for the share!

  18. Tomatoes are the best part of my summer! (We don't have lightning bugs out here...but I fondly remember them from my childhood.) We grew some heirloom tomatoes this year and I must admit that the flavor surpasses any other. Summer tomatoes on a sandwich...superb!

I always enjoy hearing from you, my blogging friends.
